Recent research has shown Intelligence Quotient (IQ) or General Mental Ability (GMA) testing is still one of the most predictive tests of on-the-job performance and career success (Schmidt & Hunter, 2004).  This research found IQ tests were even more predictive of performance than previous experience.

There were some differences in the correlations of predictive validities achieved for different levels of roles, as shown below (click here for an explanation of the term predictive validity):

The most complex IQ test is the WAIS (Wechsler Intelligence Test) which breaks down intelligence into many sub-tests that measure 14 different aspects of intelligence.  The test takes many hours to administer and is costly.    Intelligence

The WAIS is most often used by Clinical Psychologists and due to the lengthy nature of the test and complexity in interpretation, it is not often used nor recommended for the purpose of recruitment.

In addition, much shorter IQ tests are also strong measures of IQ or General Mental Ability, and therefore more suitable for use in the recruitment context.

At Niche we recommend the following IQ tests, although we can provide other IQ tests should the need arise:

Wonderlic Personnel Test (WPT)

  • 12 minutes in length.
  • 50 test items.
  • Administration needs to be supervised.
  • Online and paper based versions of the test.
  • Been in use and researched for over 60 years.
  • Good measure of both fluid and crystallised intelligence.
  • Items include general knowledge, verbal, numeric and diagrammatic problems.
  • Requires a basic level of literacy to answer most test items.
  • This IQ test gives useful information on how the person will prefer to approach new or unfamiliar tasks, and their level of speed and accuracy with intellectual problem solving.
  • This ability test provides an insight into an individuals potential for training, learning and on the job problem solving.
  • Niche Consulting has developed extensive NZ business norms for this test, in addition to the test publishers norms. Read more read more about our test norms

Wonderlic Online Quick IQ Test (Unsupervised)

  • 8 minutes in length.
  • Online and unsupervised.
  • Has rotating items.
  • Good measure of both fluid and crystallised intelligence.
  • Requires a basic level of literacy to answer most test items.
  • Items include general knowledge, verbal, numeric and diagrammatic problems.
  • This short version of the classic Wonderlic Personnel Test is designed to be used as a quick screening tool for job applicants, prior to further testing.
  • The testing result is only reported as whether the candidate is in or outside of a desired range for a certain role. This does restrict the information gained from the test, but it can be used as a screening tool.

Raven Standard Progressive Matrices

  • Can be administered untimed or timed - 20 minutes in length.
  • Administration needs to be supervised.
  • 60 test items.
  • Paper based version of the test.
  • Been in use and researched for over 40 years.
  • Good measure of fluid intelligence.
  • Items are all diagrammatic problems, where non-verbal reasoning skills are only being assessed.
  • This IQ test is particularly useful in assessing the ability to perceive, understand and grasp complex relationships in confusing situations.
  • This ability test provides an insight into an individuals potential for training, learning and on the job problem solving.
  • In jobs where literacy may be an issue this test will give a good idea of intellect which is not related to education level nor having a good understanding of English.
  • Niche Consulting has developed a NZ business norm for this test, in addition to the test publishers norms.
